Phase One Complete

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Phase One of the update to the main site is now complete. The home page and the department pages have all been updated. There are no more banners visible on any of these pages.

Along the way I found several of the programs that I had been participating in had been discontinued or changed. Several of the merchants had changed affiliate networks. There were many broken links in the banner farms.

The next phase will be a bit more work. I have over one hundred info pages, most of which will need to be rewritten. Then there are a few merchants for whom I had never written an info page. These will need to be written up. Of course, some of the original pages are no longer needed, but I will still be formulating around one hundred pages of content for the ‘More Info’ section. I will also be installing the comment system and requesting readers to post their impressions of the sites and to suggest other favorite sites for possible inclusion in my lists. I will develop a new starter page for the info pages and future content pages.

The info pages are necessary to the site plan, but it is the future content pages that are the key to success for the site. When producing the content pages I will be paying attention to basic SEO principles. That will mean keyword research and optimized pages to try to rank some of the pages in the search engines. I will also make some posts on this blog that will also contribute to the content on the site.

The rewriting of the info pages and a few other site tweaks will constitute the major update to the site. The addition of content will be an ongoing effort as well as some external site promotion. I hope to have this site in a decent position for the fall season, so it is important to get the major work out of the way now.

Do you have any suggestions about The Closet Online site? What do you think of the current color scheme (note: the blog is still the old color scheme as of this writing)?

Thanks!

Update Proceeding

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

The update to the main Closet OnlineĀ  site is in process. I have a first phase update to the jewelry and accessory department pages and an interim home page. There are several auxiliary pages that I need to build and several department pages yet to go, but at least I have a start.

I picture at least three phases for the site update. I am working through phase one now. This update is well past due, but I have been busy with other things. I am starting now so that the page will have a chance of working when the fall selling season arrives.

Phase one is getting rid of the banner advertising on the home page and the banner farms that have been the department pages. Adding the necessary auxiliary pages will be included in phase one.

Phase two will be to update my info pages adding some quality content there and getting rid of the rest of the banner advertising on the site. There will be text link advertising and AdSense blocks on the pages. I will add my comment system blocks to the various pages in this second phase.

Phase three will include more quality content and possibly another round of site design work. I like the new look better for the site, but I think that it is too dark at the present time. Maybe reversing the color scheme in the header will get me to where I want to be.

I will also be adding some images along the way. There is a slide show software with my image editor and I may look at adapting that for some areas of the site, or I may just use some small fixed images to accent various areas on the site. I want to make the site inviting and interesting enough so that people will like to stay a while when they find the site.

When the major work is done on the site I will be supporting it with some articles and other link building options. The first milestone along the way will be to get as many visitors a day as I now get in a month.

Do you have any suggestions either about my plan for the site or other things that I might try? If so please leave a comment. Thanks!

Major Update to Main Site Started

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

I have begun a major update to the main site. I uploaded for testing the new home page and I will probably go live with it as the current homepage is already broken by some of the changes that I made. I expect that most of the interior pages are broken as well, but I have not looked at many of them.

The main site started out life as a banner farm. I did one update almost a year ago to bring it up from just banner farm to glorified banner farm. I hope to make the site a useful site filled with information.

The process will go by stages. I have a new home page built (soon to be live). The next step will be to rebuild the department pages. That in itself will be a two stage process. The first phase will get rid of the banner farm look and provide a list with links to more information. Then as the info pages are built I will flesh out the department pages.

This will be one of my most intensive site updates to date. It will take some time, but I hope that there will be some dividends down the road. I am doing a cosmetic revamp as well, and when it is set I will also make this blog match the new design.

I have known that I needed to do this for some time. It has been getting higher on my priority list. I have delayed starting because it is such a big project, but now it is underway, so check in to the main site and watch the progress. Expect a bit of dust while the work is proceeding.
